December 29, 195b Consecration Of St. Paul's Sunday at 4 rnnSera'L of Saint Pau Epis copal church will take place at 4 0 clock Sunday afternoon with the sermon being delivered by the Rt ,ii B!niamin D- Dagwell, bishop 01 the diocese of Oregon. The consecration service will be in charge of Bishop Dagwell, as "ted by the Rt. Rev. James W. r. Carman, bishop coadjutor , Clergy from the diocese will be in the procession and the parish clergy and wardens will partici pate in the service. Following the consecration there wi be a reception in the parish hall with Mrs. A. D. Woodmansee, chairman of the committee in charge. The service will be broadcast over KSLM from 8 to 9 p.m. Sun day. Elmers Discuss Egypt Scene The Rev. and Mrs. R. William Elmer who have just recently been forced out of Egypt due to the war in that area, will speak and show colored li rips fit tho Fruitland Evangelical United Brc-H mren cnurcn Sunday night, De cember 30, at 7:30. The Elmers witnessed the bombing of air fields and other strategic places until they were escorted by Egyp tian armed forces to awaiting American ships of the 6th fleet which transported them to Italy and then on to the United States. During the skirmishes they lost nearly all of their personal pos sessions, including their car and a library of books. Rev. Elmer served two Amer ican churches in Cairo for 14 months as minister to some 2,100 American citizens. He is a for mer pastor of the Fruitland church, having served it 15 years ago along with the EUB church at Jefferson. Friends Minister Attends Meeting John Fankhauser, pastor of South Salem Friends church, will attend the mid-winter C. E. con vention of young people of the denomination at Cannon Beach, Dec. 28-31. In the absence of the pastor, Mrs. Cora Gregory Nordyke will preach during the Sunday morning service. In the evening, Elizabeth Aebischer will show slides and speak concerning her experiences during a recent trip to Jamaica, Haiti and other Caribbean Islands. New Lutheran 1st Woodburn WOODBURN (Special) Rev. Edwin Sandvig will conduct his first church services Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Woodburn Immanuel Lutheran church. He will be in stalled by Dr. Foss, district presi dent, on the following Sunday, Jan. 7. Rev. Sandvig, his wife and foyr small children were expected to arrive in Woodburn Friday, coming here from Arlington, Wash. Services Sunday will be Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. the worship hour at 11 a.m. when Rev. Sandvig will give his first sermon. The Sunday school Christmas pro gram will be at 7:30 o'clock Sun day night. The Ladies Aid will meet next Thursday, at 2 p.m. in the church basement with the of ficers as hostesses. The annual business meeting is planned for Jan. 8, beginning with a pot luck supper at 6:30 p.m. Rev. Robert E. Van has chosen as his sermon topic for Sunday morning "A Great Year to Live" at the Woodburn and Bethel Pres byterian churches. Gebhard, pastor of Christ Luth eran church, located at 1760 State street. Mevcrthless, this minister who was dedicated to the church early in his life con tinues to be interested in such extra-curricular activities as mu sic, dramatics and forensics. All of these held his attention during college life. Born in 1915 near Fargo, N. D., one of six sons of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Gebhard, Pastor Gebhard received his education during the days of the depression, which meant working his way through college at Concordia, Moorhead, Minn., and Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa. Rev. A change of location to the Four Corners area is contem plated. Christ Lutheran congregation was organized in 1894 and served particularly German immigrants to the Willamette valley until be coming under synodical affilia tion with the American Lutheran church. The congregation now number ing about 500 baptized souls, con ducts a Sunday School for about 250 students, besides holding two Sunday morning worship serv ices. Leadership abilities of Rev. Gebhard were recognized early in his ministerial career. He was instrumental in organizing the full-time youth department of the American Lutheran church at its national headquarters in Colum bus, Obio, in 1941-42 while he was doing graduate work at Cap ital university in that city, Rev. Gebhard has served on many boards for the church in the interest of youth work and parish education. At, present he is serving on the Colton Bible Camp board and the Lutheran Student Foundation of Oregon. Much of the credit for being an active pastor to his parish and national church body goes to the faithfulness of his wife, the for mer Dons Kasch of Winfrcd, S. D., where they were married in 1946. A former elementary and Junior high school teacher, Mrs. Gebhard has served the church through the Department of Parish Education as the 7. oa- en's Missionary Federation since the days of her teaching career. They have three sons, Gerald, Ro ger and Thomas. Rev. Gcbhard's father was carpenter and grain buyer during the days ot me great wheal har vests on the Dakota plains. Grandfather was a parochial school teacner and great grand father was a pastor in northern Wisconsin from which the fam ily moved to Dakota during the homestead days. Two of Rev. Gebhard's five brothers gave their lives to their country during World War II and two entered construction work in Oakland, Calif., where the mother now resides. Trinity Church To Crusade at Four Corners FOUR CORNERS (SpeciaD- Trinity Methodist Church is plan ning a church school attendance' crusade between January and Easter following the theme of "Circuit Rider Days". A kick-off banquet will be held Sunday eve ning in the form of an all family pot luck supper at the church. Special feature at the pot luck supper will be a display of items connected with the pioneer days of Methodism in Oregon. Mrs. Jess Daugherly, principal of Englewood School and a mem ber of Trinity Methodist Church, heads a special committee which has been active in gathering items connected with pioneer days of Methodism. The display on Sunday evening will feature such items as saddle bags used by the circuit riders, a portable pulpit used by circuit riders, the oldest Methodist Dis cipline printed in the United States, old hymnals carried by the circuit riders as well as Bibles. An interesting flisplay of old Bibles will be presented in which Bibles of different languages will be displayed. Among these will be Russian, Greek, Hebrew. Spanish and German most of which arc more than 100 years old. A pic ture of the first Oregon Methodist conference also will be on display mac evening, ut special interest lo young people and children will be a small covered wagon which is a replica of-those pulled across tne plains. During the crusade the children of the church school are being encouraged to do the things that me circuit riders did In the early days; to try to influence their friends to come to church school and to try to win them to the Christian faith. The children will be encouraged to wear western costumes during the crusade, if they like, to church school but to carry their Bibles instead of Buns The attendance goal for the cru sade Is 350. Daring the pot luck supper the 32 Sunday school teachers and helpers will be introduced to the congregation and open house will be held in the new building. This new educational building with 7,200 square feet is not yet fin- lsnea Dut is being used for church school purposes. Chucch at Ferrj Baptists Schedule 4-IIoiir Program New Year's Eve The feature length story, "The Power of God," will be shown at 10:45 p.m. during the leslive new Year's Eve evening at the First Baptist church Monday night. The special occasion will begin at 8 p.m. with a two-hour period of fellowship and fun time. A buf fet lunch, will be served at 10 p.m. and the Inspirational hour will follow, featuring the film and a quiet time of inspiration and meditation as the new year of 1957 begins. Pastor Anderson, will be speak ing at both services of the church Sunday. His morning topic is entitled "Wist Ye Not," and at the 7:30 hour he will deal with the subjeet of "The Creditor and the Debtors." 1st Methodist Family Night Watch Party First Methodist church will ob serve New Year's Eve with a pro gram that will emphasize the fam ily. It will extend over a three hour period from 9 p.m. to mid night. The film "One Foot In Heaven" will be shown in the sanctuary followed by refreshments and fel lowship in the dining room. At 11 o'clock Dr. Keith Lusted will present several organ selec tions. At 11:15 a presentation entitled "My Church in the New Year" will be mane by Bill mentor, Don Walton, Elmer J. Church, Dr. Paul Trucblood and Mrs. Dennis Patch. The closing meditation will be given by Dr. Brooks H. Moore, pastor. Special music will be furnished by a mixed quartet consisting of Margaret Homnci, Kamenne item nel. Dr. Trucblood and Kenneth Hamilton. The Triad, Baxter and McCor mick Sundav School classes will assist in presenting the program. Communion Ends Calvary Baptist New Year's Slate A three-part New Year't Eve observance will be presented by Calvary Baptist church from 9 p.m. lo muimgni Monday. At 9 p.m. there will be a fel lowship scrvico in the sanctuary with hymns, special music anu testimonies. The hour from 10 to 11 will be devoted to fun and refreshments. Each person attending is to pro vide a box lunch consisting of a sandwich, fruit and dessert. Hot beverage will be provided by the church. A communion service will start at 11 p.m. with Dr. W. The program has drawn increasingly larger numbers of the public in attendance since its inception in 1931 as members and friends of the congregation "watch the old year out and the New Year in." Unitarians to Hear Philosopher Dr. Philip Bashor, professor of philosophy at Lewis and Clark col lege, will speak to the Unitarian Fellowship Sunday morning at 10:30 at the YWCA. Dr. Bashor, a graduate of Occi dental College, Los Angeles, did seven yenrs graduate work at Yale University in tho fields of religion and philosophy. He wrote his thesis on "Tho Philosophy of Plato" and will speak on that subject.
